Now, however is a great time to give the gift of better health to yourself. Here are four tips to start getting back in shape:

Go slow! You need to set realistic goals so your body can gradually adapt. You may feel self-conscious at first. Find a friend as a walking partner. You may also find that you tire or get winded easily. Your stamina will increase as your fitness level improves.

Drink! If you are overweight you may find you are less adaptable to temperature changes and more prone to dehydration. It’s important to drink plenty of water before, during and after exercise.

Feet first! Your feet take the brunt of the load when your body is carrying extra weight. Buy footwear that fits well and offers adequate support.

Creative moves! Find ways to be more active and burn calories every day. It can be as simple as using a pedometer and increasing the number of steps you take every day. Walk around and up and down the stairs at work. Stroll through the mall as you window shop. Rake the leaves. Maybe even go caroling in your neighborhood! As your fitness level improves aim for 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day.
