Those of you who know me, know that I am passionate about healthy aging!  At 61, I know that fighting for good health – physical, mental, spiritual and emotional health – in the second half of life is paramount to happiness and contentment.

My philosophy about healthy aging may surprise you.  I believe that health is not a goal to be achieved but a life value that becomes a part of our being.

Food:  Health is not about following the ‘right’ diet de jour, rather it is about enjoying food … real food.  It is about knowing what makes you feel your best.  Have you begun to notice that a lighter meal makes you feel less sluggish?  I like the way I feel when I make healthy food choices.  I am definitely not saying I always eat healthy but when I don’t it is a great reminder of why I do!

Exercise:  Stretch yourself!  Get out of your comfort zone!  About a year ago, Bruce and I joined Orange Theory Fitness. It is a fabulous workout, if you haven’t tried it.  We are among the oldest people there, but we still can row, run and lift more than most of those young pups!  It was uncomfortable doing something new, but we stuck with it, got good at it, and now can’t imagine not doing it!

Don’t be afraid to play!  I promise it keeps you young!  Last weekend we were in Michigan and had the chance to zip line.   The guides showed us how to go upside down!  I’m not going to lie – I was scared – but I did it and it was a BLAST!  Check out the photo in case you don’t believe me!

Sleep:  It is a powerful tool for living a long healthy life!  Those of us past 60 still need 7-8 hours every night to maintain our energy and a healthy weight.  For more information on how to get a better night’s sleep, see the sleep chapter in my book, Eat Well to Be Well!

Life is an amazing journey to be cherished.  Are you doing everything you can to enjoy every moment?  I’d love to hear stories of how you’ve chosen to embrace health in you second half!  Send them to me at jan@jtawellness.com.
