During the month of May we will be taking a look at ways to assist with healthy aging. Who of us would not want to postpone or even stop the aging process that we face as adults? Unfortunately human aging is inevitable with basic factors that cannot be controlled, such as genes and gravity.

The good news is there are certain basic factors that CAN be controlled as we age. Let’s take a look:

Nutrition

  • Anti-oxidants – including plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet can benefit your skin
  • Adequate fluids

Habits

  • Don’t smoke – toxic chemicals
  • Avoid excessive drinking -causes nutrient and mineral deficiencies
  • Sleep – insomnia can increase your body’s inflammation and shorten lifespan
  • Exercise at least 30-60 minutes/day

Exposure

  • Stop intentional sunbathing – a suntan results in damaged skin
  • Always wear sunscreen to prevents the breakdown of skin-firming proteins
  • Avoid the sun between 10am – 3pm when UV rays are the strongest

Additionally, current research suggests taking certain vitamins can aid in skin repair.

  1. Vitamin A – fights infections and helps to maintain healthy skin, bones, organs, and regulates cell growth and division. Deficiencies can lead to skin infections and disorders.

Sources: red, orange, and yellow fruits, collards, kale, turnip greens, eggs, milk

  1. Vitamin C – essential for growth and repair of all body tissue. Helps cartilage loss in those with OSA. Deficiencies can lead to connective tissue defects such as gingivitis, rashes, internal bleeding, and impaired wound healing.
Sources: citrus fruits, tomatoes, strawberries, bell peppers, broccoli, kiwi fruit.
