Okay, let’s face it; the holidays can be a very difficult season to maneuver when you are trying to stay on your healthy eating plan.  Getting through the whirlwind of holiday parties and family gatherings can seem like a constant barrage of temptation to stray from your healthy eating goals.

The holidays don’t have to be a relentless obstacle course requiring you to be battle ready every moment, but they do require some pre-planning and strategizing to make your way safely through to January 2015!

Here are my Top 5 Holiday Party Tips:

  1. Eat before arriving.  It may seem logical to try “saving” your calories throughout the day before going to a holiday party.  Unfortunately, this idea can backfire, leaving you ravenous and ready to eat everything in sight!  Instead, try eating as you normally would throughout the day and eat a high protein snack before the party to curb your pre-party appetite.
  2. Stay hydrated.  Many times we mistakenly think we are hungry when really we are thirsty. If you choose to drink an alcoholic beverage, try drinking a glass of water before and after.
  3. Visit the fruit and veggie tray first!  When visiting the food table, take a moment to locate the healthy fruit and veggie selections.  Why not first sample a plate to see if you are still hungry, before choosing a few of your favorite higher calorie items. As you peruse the dessert table, try choosing one special treat that will satisfy your craving or consider sharing your dessert with a friend, if you just want a taste!
  4. Bring a healthy treat.  If you’re unsure about whether or not your host will include healthy party food choices, ask! If the host is already offering a veggie tray, bring hummus or a Greek yogurt based dip!
  5. Mingle!  Enjoy socializing when you arrive instead of running to the food or beverage table. When you choose to eat, make your selections and then position yourself as far as possible away from the food table to avoid unconscious eating.

Those of you who know me know that I LOVE food.  It is more than just getting the basic nutrients we need to survive; to me it is pure JOY!   I hope these tips I’ve shared will allow you to make healthy food choices while still celebrating the joy of the season with family and friends.  So go ahead, I encourage you to savor that one tamale or sugar cookie you’ve had your eye on while being mindful to stop when you are satisfied rather than stuffed!

May you enjoy peace and know the richness of God’s love and grace this holiday season!  Merry Christmas!
