Are you ready to take charge of your inflammation? This month we have discussed causes as well as food items that assist in lowering chronic inflammation within the body.

Inflammation is the result when our body confuses healthy tissues for harmful pathogens. The body’s natural reaction to an “invader” is to fight it off and repair the damaged tissues; thus causing inflammation. A chronic state of inflammation, is the result of the confusion within the body being under a constant “state of attack”.

As you know, our diet plays a HUGE role in our health and state of inflammation! Every day, we choose foods that help or hinder. We know that foods high in sugar and saturated fat cause inflammation. Helpful choices that decrease inflammation include fatty fish, dark leafy greens, nuts, low-fat dairy, garlic, whole grains, olive oil, green tea and berries!

When we decrease the amount of inflammatory foods and increase anti-inflammatory foods, symptoms such as joint pain, fatigue and elevated cholesterol levels improve. Some of the latest research reviewed by Tufts University showed that citrus can improve the uptake of bioavailability of anti-inflammatory foods. So next time, make sure to choose helpful food items that will reduce inflammation rather than promote it.
